When Do Babies Start Walking?

What cruising and first steps look like, how to make practice safer, and when to bring a concern to the pediatrician.

Cruising is progress, but it is not independent walking

Before first steps, children often pull to stand, lower themselves, move sideways while holding furniture, and briefly balance. These experiences build strength and coordination. Milestone ages are useful points for checking progress, not a race or a prediction of later athletic ability.

Create safe reasons to move

Offer plenty of floor time and stable furniture for cruising. Place an interesting object a short distance along a sofa or encourage moving between two close, steady supports. Let the child lead rather than repeatedly pulling them upright or walking them by raised hands.

  • Anchor furniture
  • Gate stairs
  • Clear sharp or unstable objects
  • Use nonslip bare feet indoors when practical
  • Avoid seated wheeled walkers

Ask early when the pattern concerns you

Contact the child’s health-care provider when a milestone is missed, one side is used very differently, the body seems unusually stiff or floppy, pain limits movement, or a skill is lost. A developmental checklist helps organize observations but cannot evaluate an individual child.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

A simple plan to begin

  1. Childproof a short movement route
  2. Offer stable cruising support
  3. Use the CDC checklist at 15 and 18 months
  4. Share concerns or short videos with the pediatrician

COMMON QUESTIONS

Helpful answers before you go

Does holding furniture count as walking?

That is called cruising. It is an important step, but independent walking means taking steps without holding a person or object.

Will a seated baby walker teach walking?

No. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that seated wheeled walkers can cause serious injuries and do not help babies learn to walk.
