Tummy Time for Newborns: When to Start and How Much
A safe, gradual way to build awake tummy time into the day—even when a young baby is not impressed at first.
Awake tummy time builds a different kind of strength
Time on the tummy while awake helps a baby practice lifting and turning the head, bearing weight through the arms, and strengthening the neck and shoulders. It also reduces the amount of awake time spent with pressure on the back of the head. Several short sessions count; a newborn does not need one long workout.
Make the first sessions easier
Choose a calm, alert moment after waking or a diaper change—not immediately after a large feeding. Get down face-to-face on a firm floor surface, sing quietly, or place one simple object where the baby can see it. Awake chest-to-chest time can also help a baby get used to the position while an adult is fully alert and watching.
- Begin with a few minutes
- Stay within arm’s reach
- Try several times across the day
- Stop and reset when the baby is overwhelmed
- Increase time gradually
Notice progress and asymmetry
Look for gradual changes in head lifting, turning both directions, and tolerance. Tell the pediatrician if the baby strongly favors one side, develops a worsening flat area, seems unusually stiff or floppy, loses a skill, or you are worried about movement. Babies born early or with medical needs may need an individualized plan.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
A simple plan to begin
- Choose two calm awake periods today
- Try a short floor or chest-to-chest session
- Stay close and watch breathing and comfort
- Share persistent difficulty or asymmetry with the pediatrician
COMMON QUESTIONS
Helpful answers before you go
Does tummy time on my chest count?
It can count when both adult and baby are fully awake and the adult is actively supervising. Add firm-floor practice as the baby becomes more comfortable and strong.
What if my baby falls asleep?
Move the baby to a separate, firm, flat sleep surface and place them on their back. Tummy time is only for awake, supervised practice.
