HEALTH & SAFETY

Online Gaming Safety for Kids

A practical check of chat, friends, purchases, privacy, account security, and the conversations controls cannot replace.

Map the risks in the actual game

A rating does not explain every social feature. Check voice and text chat, user-created content, direct messages, trading, livestreaming, ads, location or camera access, and in-app purchases. Explain scams, “free currency” links, requests to switch apps, secret chats, and pressure to meet offline.

Configure the whole account chain

Set controls on the device, store, game, and connected email. Use private profiles, known-friends-only contact, purchase PINs, content limits, updates, unique passwords or passkeys, and multifactor authentication. Remove unneeded payment methods and turn on transaction notices.

  • Private profile
  • Known friends only
  • Purchase approval
  • Unique password and MFA
  • Camera and location off unless needed

Keep telling safer than hiding

Co-play or observe long enough to understand the child’s game and its report tools. Promise that asking for help after a scam, threat, sexual request, or mistake will not begin with punishment. Recheck settings after every major game, platform, or age change.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

A simple plan to begin

  1. Inventory games and connected accounts
  2. Restrict contact and purchases
  3. Turn on updates and MFA
  4. Hold a weekly ten-minute gaming check-in

COMMON QUESTIONS

Helpful answers before you go

Are parental controls enough?

No. They reduce some risks, but settings change and cannot interpret every situation. Pair them with supervision, secure accounts, and nonjudgmental conversation.

Is voice chat safe?

It adds contact and privacy risks. Disable it for younger children or limit it to verified real-life friends, and teach older children to leave and report uncomfortable conversations.
