Cyberbullying: Signs and a Parent Response Plan

How to listen without blame, check immediate safety, preserve evidence, report the behavior, and support recovery.

Open the conversation with observation, not accusation

Changes in device use, strong reactions to notifications, hidden screens, sleep or school changes, headaches, stomachaches, or withdrawal may deserve a check-in. Try, “You seem upset after messages. You will not lose my help for telling me what happened.”

Triage safety before the platform problem

Ask directly about threats, stalking, sexual images, fear of physical harm, and self-harm or suicide. Do not reply to or forward abusive content. Record dates, account names, URLs, and context; save screenshots when doing so does not create or redistribute illegal sexual imagery.

  • Listen and thank the child
  • Ask about immediate danger
  • Preserve non-illegal evidence
  • Block and report
  • Notify the school in writing when relevant

Support recovery, not only account cleanup

Agree on targeted changes such as muting, blocking, or a short pause without cutting the child off from every supportive peer. Follow up after 48 hours and one week. Involve the pediatrician, counselor, or therapist when distress persists or functioning changes.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

A simple plan to begin

  1. Listen and check immediate safety
  2. Create a dated evidence log
  3. Block and report through the platform and school
  4. Schedule emotional-support follow-up

COMMON QUESTIONS

When should police or emergency services be involved?
