Starting Solid Foods Safely

Readiness signs, safer textures, responsive feeding, and a cautious plan for introducing common allergens.

Age and readiness work together

Look for good head and neck control, sitting with support, bringing objects to the mouth, swallowing food rather than pushing it out, and interest in eating. Breast milk or iron-fortified formula remains the main nutrition through the first year; solids are added gradually.

Match texture to skill and prevent choking

Seat the baby upright and supervise every bite. Begin with smooth, mashed, or soft foods and advance texture as skills grow. Modify round, sticky, hard, or firm foods. Never offer whole nuts, whole grapes, popcorn, hard raw chunks, or spoonfuls of nut butter.

  • Upright seat
  • Soft developmentally appropriate texture
  • Small starting amount
  • Watch hunger and fullness cues
  • No eating while moving or lying down

Introduce allergens in a planned way

Potentially allergenic foods can be introduced in age-appropriate forms when other solids begin. Try them during a calm daytime meal when an adult can observe. Ask the clinician first when severe eczema, egg allergy, prematurity, poor growth, or swallowing concerns may change the plan.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

A simple plan to begin

  1. Confirm age and readiness signs
  2. Choose one soft iron-rich first food
  3. Plan allergens for a calm daytime meal
  4. Keep a simple food and reaction log

COMMON QUESTIONS

Helpful answers before you go

Is baby-led weaning safer than spoon-feeding?

Neither method removes choking risk. Safe preparation, readiness, upright seating, and direct supervision matter with either approach.

How is gagging different from choking?

Gagging is often noisy and protective. Severe choking may be quiet because air cannot move; call 911 and begin infant choking care when a baby cannot breathe, cry, or cough effectively.
