Simple Science Activities for Kids at Home
Safe, low-cost investigations that help children predict, observe, compare, record, and revise an idea.
Turn an ordinary event into a question
Ask which objects roll down a ramp, what melts fastest in different places, which materials absorb water, how shadows move, or what a seed needs to sprout. Use one variable at a time when possible so children can notice a real difference.
Let the child do the thinking
Before testing, ask, “What do you think will happen?” Accept every prediction. Invite the child to draw, make tally marks, arrange objects in order, or dictate an observation. If the result is unexpected, say, “What could we try next?” rather than correcting the guess.
- Ramp and rolling test
- Sink-or-float investigation
- Ice-melting comparison
- Shadow tracking
- Seed-sprouting journal
- Water-absorption test
Keep home science genuinely safe
Avoid experiments that mix household chemicals, create gas in sealed containers, use flames, heat glass, taste materials, or rely on small objects with young children. An adult should select and supervise every material; “science” does not make an unsafe reaction appropriate for children.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
A simple plan to begin
- Choose one safe question
- Ask for a prediction
- Let the child test and observe
- Draw or dictate what happened
COMMON QUESTIONS
Helpful answers before you go
What if the experiment does not work?
That is useful information. Compare what you expected with what happened and change one part before trying again—the same process scientists use.
Do I need to explain the science correctly first?
No. Begin with observation and shared wondering. Look up the explanation together in a reliable child-friendly source after the child has explored.
