Signs Your Child May Need Extra Learning Support
What repeated learning struggles can look like and how to ask the school for specific observations and evaluation.
Watch for patterns, not a single bad week
Concern may grow when a child repeatedly struggles with sound-letter connections, reading fluency, spelling, handwriting, number sense, following directions, remembering learned material, or organizing work compared with the instruction they have received. Frustration, avoidance, headaches, or behavior around one subject can also be clues.
Language background, hearing, vision, attendance, stress, attention, teaching methods, and access to instruction all affect learning. A checklist cannot determine the cause.
Ask for concrete information
Bring samples and ask the teacher: Which skill is difficult? What instruction has been tried? How did the child respond? What does classroom data show? Ask what short-term support can start now and when progress will be reviewed.
- Save dated work samples
- Write the child’s own description
- Check hearing and vision
- Request school screening or evaluation in writing
- Schedule a progress-review date
Protect the child’s identity while seeking help
Use language such as “this skill is hard right now” instead of “you are bad at math.” Keep reading, art, building, music, movement, and other strengths visible. Evaluation is meant to understand how a child learns and what support is needed—not to reduce the child to a label.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
A simple plan to begin
- Document the repeated skill pattern
- Ask what instruction and supports have been tried
- Discuss hearing, vision, and health with the pediatrician
- Request the school’s evaluation process
COMMON QUESTIONS
Helpful answers before you go
Can a bright child have a learning disability?
Yes. A learning disability is not a measure of intelligence. A child can have strong reasoning, creativity, or knowledge while needing explicit support in a particular learning process.
Do I have to wait for the school to suggest testing?
No. In the United States, a parent can ask the public school how to request an evaluation. Procedures vary, so make the request in writing and keep a copy.
