How to compare child-care choices without feeling overwhelmed
Use the same core questions at every visit so you can compare safety, fit, communication, and cost.
Start with non-negotiables
Confirm hours, location, age served, current availability, total cost, and licensing status where applicable before scheduling a long visit. Ask what is included, how closures work, and whether deposits or notice periods are refundable.
Observe the everyday experience
Notice whether children are greeted warmly, actively supervised, and offered age-appropriate choices. Look for clean and usable spaces rather than expecting a showroom. Ask how the provider responds to crying, conflict, biting, toilet learning, allergies, and individual routines.
- How will you contact me during the day or in an emergency?
- Who may be present or substitute for the regular caregiver?
- How are meals, naps, outdoor play, and screen use handled?
- May I review the contract and handbook before deciding?
Compare fit, not just features
A program can be high quality and still be a poor match for a family’s schedule, communication preference, or child’s needs. Take notes immediately after each visit and follow up on unclear answers before paying a deposit.
Use one written checklist for every program so a beautiful room does not outweigh policies or interactions.
