Car Seat to Booster: When Is Your Child Ready?
How to move through car-seat stages by the seat’s limits and the child’s fit—not by peer pressure or one birthday.
Move by fit and product limits
Read the label and manual for the child’s current seat. Rear-facing protects the head, neck, and spine and should continue until the child reaches the rear-facing height or weight limit. After that, use a forward-facing seat with a harness and top tether until its limit is reached.
A booster is for a child who has outgrown the forward-facing harness and can remain correctly seated for the entire ride. Keep children in the back seat through age 12.
Check installation and harness fit every trip
Read both the vehicle and car-seat manuals. Use the approved seat-belt or lower-anchor method and the top tether when forward-facing. At the belt path, the installed seat should move no more than one inch. Keep harness straps flat and snug, with the chest clip at armpit level.
- Correct stage and direction
- Seat moves no more than one inch
- Harness lies flat
- Chest clip at armpit level
- Top tether used forward-facing
A booster ends only when the belt fits
The lap belt should lie low on the upper thighs and the shoulder belt across the chest and shoulder, while the child’s back stays against the seat and knees bend at the edge. Register the restraint for recall notices and use a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician for an installation check.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
A simple plan to begin
- Record the child’s height and weight
- Read both seat and vehicle manuals
- Check installation and harness fit
- Find a certified inspection through NHTSA
COMMON QUESTIONS
Helpful answers before you go
Is LATCH safer than a seat belt?
Both can be safe when used correctly. Choose the method allowed by the manuals, observe anchor limits, and do not combine methods unless both manufacturers permit it.
When can a child stop using a booster?
Only when the vehicle belt fits correctly for the whole ride. Age alone is not enough, and fit may differ between vehicles.
